Sandbach - A Fairtrade Town

Sandbach won Fairtrade status in July 2008 following the formation of a Steering Group in 2007 and joined 400 other towns and villages across Britain.

Once Fairtrade status is granted by the Fairtrade Foundation you have to maintain this and continue to promote Fairtrade within the town. The steering group has organised various events such as a market stall during Fairtrade fortnight this year, a stand at Sandbach Today and the recent Fairer Sandbach Eco Fair. The group is happy to hear from anyone interested in Fairtrade and particularly traders and businesses wanting to provide products with the Fairtrade mark. The group can provide advice and support. 7th March 2009 - Launch of Fairtrade Cotton Bag

A new Fairtrade cotton bag unique to Sandbach has been launched with the help of the Town Council.

Part of a commitment to fairer business and the environment, the new bag has been designed by Cllr Graham Bell and is made from certified Fairtrade cotton.

The Sandbach bag was unveiled and on sale during Fairtrade Fortnight 2009 and will be made widely available to local residents and shoppers over the coming months.

Launched on March 7th, the bag was available from a stall run by the Fairtrade Steering Group in the indoor market in Sandbach to promote Fairtrade, particularly chocolate and bananas.

Cllr Deborah Darnes, Chair of the Fairtrade Steering Group, stated that it has been good to work with the Plastic Bag Group to produce a bag which will promote Sandbach as a Fairtrade Town and help to reduce the use of plastic bags."There is a lot of support from the public in reducing waste and this stylish bag will neatly fit into another bag or your pocket," she added. We are hoping that people will purchase and use Sandbach Fairtrade bags to show their support for the town and the Fairtrade movement, as well as reducing their plastic bag use.
