On 4th April 1579 Queen Elizabeth I awarded a Royal Charter to Sir John Radcliffe of Ordsall for a market to be held in Sandbach. The market is held every Thursday on the Scotch Common. There is also an indoor market held on Thursdays and Saturday mornings under the Town Hall. A hundred years ago but no longer a wholesale market was held on the Market Square. There are moves afoot to revive the use of the Square as a market place.
The market attracts large crowds from the surrounding area of Cheshire and Borough Council have plans to enter into partnership with a private sector market operator to rejuvenate the market.
The Royal Charter allowed a fair on the last weekend in September. The Funfair still comes each year to the Scotch Common and is much enjoyed by the younger generation.
